Elizabeth Charmer Exhibition

New Temporary Exhibition at Ludlow Museum: Elizabeth Charmer: Survival, Love and Heartbreak

Ludlow Town Council is pleased to announce the opening of a new temporary exhibition at Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross. The exhibition will run from Friday, 31st January to mid-April and offers a compelling glimpse into the life of Elizabeth Charmer, a remarkable 19th-century woman who defied societal expectations as one of Ludlow’s "women of the night."

This fascinating exhibit explores Elizabeth Charmer’s life, detailing her struggles, resilience, and complex story of survival in a world dominated by societal constraints. The exhibition is inspired by Cora BB’s novel, “In the Shadow of the Linney”. It coincides with International Women’s Day on 8th March, providing a timely reflection on women’s history and empowerment.

Elizabeth Charmer holds a special place in Ludlow’s history for her resilience and strength and a personal connection as great-grandmother to The Poyner ladies and author Cora BB.

Mayor of Ludlow Councillor Beverley Waite said; “We are proud to host this powerful display, which highlights an important part of Ludlow’s history and aligns with International Women’s Day. This exhibit serves as a poignant reminder of the continuing struggles that women face today and the importance of recognising and addressing these challenges. By reflecting on Elizabeth Charmer’s life, we hope to inspire conversations about resilience, equality, and the work that still lies ahead.”

Visitors can view the exhibit on Friday - Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays from 10am to 4pm. Entry is £1.20, with free admission for children under 16.
