Ludlow Museum Accreditation

National Museum Accreditation Scheme Success in Ludlow

Ludlow Town Council has managed Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross since 2016 and is proud to have consistently maintained the high standards required to attain Arts Council accreditation. Shropshire Council Museum Service provide the main collection, and we are grateful for their support through a mentoring scheme, and we are also very glad to have the invaluable local support of Friends of Ludlow Museum.

As the Arts Council states, museums are the cornerstones of our communities, and accreditation is a nationally recognised standard to ensure museums are sustainable, focused and trusted, inspiring the confidence of the public, and offering great visitor experiences. Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross tells Ludlow’s story through the ages from 400 million years ago and makes the most of its central location with impressive views along historic Broad Street.

There are friendly and knowledgeable staff to welcome visitors, a creative corner for children and activity trails to help them, and their parents, explore Ludlow’s local history.

Each year, there are a series of small changing exhibitions exploring local people and connections. The current exhibition is entitled Elizabeth Charmer - Survival, Love, Heartbreak and it explores the life of a 19th-century woman who defied societal norms as Ludlow’s notorious woman of the night.  It runs until April 2025.

Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each week and Bank Holiday Mondays from 10-4pm.  Adult entry is £1.20, under 16s are free  www.ludlowmuseum.co.uk
